3GNY is proud to partner with The Rededication Project to present this conversation with Holocaust survivor Alfons Sperber, his grandson Ron Siesser, and great-grandson Eli Siesser.
Alfons Sperber was only 11 years old when he began his narrow escape from the grips of the German Anschluss (annexation) of Austria in 1938, eventually being hidden in a Christian monastery in France and crossing over the Alps into Switzerland, before gaining passage to the United States in 1948. When his 11 year old great-grandson, Eli, was assigned an immigration project for school, Alfons reached deep into his past to unearth long-buried memories. Alfons began sharing his personal story with his great-grandson, and his story and interactions with his 11 year old great-grandson became the focus of the poignant and moving novel “Live and Be Counted,” written by Alfons' grandson Ron Siesser.
