3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesday - The Three Lives of Philip Markowicz featuring Steven Markowicz

Join us as Steven Markowicz shares the story of his grandfather, Philip Markowicz.

Philip often talked about his life before, during, and after the war as though he had lived three lives. The son of a District Rabbi of the Gur Chassid sect, Philip was a Talmudic prodigy at a young age.

When Nazis invaded his hometown of Przerab, Poland, Philip escaped by hiding in a hay wagon. At Auschwitz-Birkenau, he avoided the gas chambers by sneaking into an outside work detail. Philip then survived a series of labor camps, enduring hard labor, cold, starvation, beatings, disease, and a death march.

In a DP camp after the war, Philip met and married his wife, Ruth, another Holocaust survivor, and had a son. Theirs were the first marriage and the first birth in the camp.

In Memory of Simon Berger z"l

This program is sponsored by the Berger family in memory of Simon Berger z"l (1927-2022). Born in Lodz, Poland, Simon was the sole Holocaust survivor of his immediate family. Following the war, Simon met his wife of 73 years, Rita, went to fight in Israel's Independence War, immigrated to the US in 1954, worked tirelessly until the age of 94, and instilled in his children and grandchildren a deep appreciation for his family's history so that they could continue educating future generations.

3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesdays take place Wednesdays at 8:00 pm ET. In this virtual series, grandchildren of Holocaust survivors share their family stories with us. You'll also learn more about our educational initiative, WEDU ("We Educate"), which trains 3Gs to learn and share their family stories in school classrooms.
